Healthy Schools
At Portfields School we actively promote healthy living as part of the Curriculum and as part of everyday school life.
The children at Portfields have the opportunity to learn about what a healthy lifestyle means; including how we keep fit and healthy through sporting activities.
Healthy eating is actively taught through our cookery club.
Portfields School has been awarded the bronze award as part of the ‘Healthy Schools Initiative' and has recently achieved the national award.
A Child's View
Our school is a very healthy school. We do lots of exciting activities that promote a healthy lifestyle.
We have a good range of after-school clubs that are fun and healthy – for example, football, cross country, cookery and netball. The teachers that take the cross country and football clubs set a good example to the children by joining in themselves and proving that even grown ups can be fit and active!
Many of our lessons are centred on being healthy. We have Indoor PE and Outdoor Games once a week. The teachers make us work very hard in these lessons. Apart from physical exercise, we all learn about how to keep our bodies healthy in other ways in PSHE and Science lessons.
The School encourages us to bring a healthy, balanced lunch each day. The Midday Meals Supervisors have eyes in the back of their heads! They make sure that the children eat their sandwiches first before they are allowed to go on to anything even slightly less healthy!
We recently took part in a Skipping Workshop and I was chosen to be one of the demonstration team. We were taught about the benefits of skipping and were given loads of ideas for different skipping games. After the skipping day, we were able to purchase skipping ropes. The playground is full of super healthy children bouncing their way through playtimes at the moment! My family has also gone skipping crazy since the demonstration.
One of the nice things about my school is that the teachers recognise that children don't want to be healthy all the time. We are allowed occasional treats! Our termly Hot Dog Lunches are very popular – from my point of view, being healthy doesn't just mean eating healthily all the time. It's also important to be mentally healthy and happy (which does mean having treats sometimes). If we weren't allowed to do this, we would all end up like Gillian McKeith and I'm not sure if that would be a good thing! Broccoli and Brussels sprout smoothie anyone?
